It’s Your Birthday Coming Up and Why It’s Important To Do Something New Each Year

A few of my clients have elected to do a Vancouver Boudoir Session with me for their birthdays. Boudoir for your birthday! I mean why not? As adults we don’t always take the time to celebrate our special day and getting older. Not sure about you but once you hit a certain age, adding yet another year doesn’t always feel so great. Who wants to feel old? On the other hand, I’m grateful and blessed to have experienced yet another year of life, so I opt to be happy about having my birthday come around again and again.

With the busyness of life however, we’re busy, our friends are busy, we don’t always get the chance to celebrate in the traditional way. Certainly no party hats, and candles on a cake. But it is what you make it. Right?

How did I celebrate my birthday this year?

This year I actually opted to throw myself my own birthday party and I was lucky enough to get it in right before Covid hit. I had a mid-week Babes Boozy Brunch with my fave gals and it was awesome.

In my opinion, that’s part of self care. Celebrating you! And if you’ve read anything about Mateus Studios, I’m all about celebrating women. So when my frient (client turned friend) Ms. M told me she wanted to do her Vancouver Boudoir Session on her birthday, I thought, that’s perfect! But I had to ask her about it too. Find out the why behind this choice. Here’s what she had to say.

Why boudoir for your birthday?

“For the last few years, I started to make a conscious effort to experience something new on (or around) my birthday.  New experiences are important to me because although it can be scary, it’s an opportunity to learn and discover new aspects of myself.”

“Self growth is important to me and it happens through new experiences and pushing myself to do something that scares and challenges me.  It’s also important for me to experience something new on my birthday to set the intention for the coming year that new experiences are important.”

“So when I had the opportunity to do an intimate session with Michele, there was nothing better I wanted to experience on my birthday. The session was amazing and I think it set a great foundation for new experiences for the coming year.”

I should mention that when Ms. M shared this with me, it was back in February before the entire world changed. I wanted to see if her perspective may or may not have altered in any way since Covid hit so I asked her about it and here’s her reply.

How has Covid-19 changed your intentions, if at all?

“My intention at the beginning of the year on my birthday to continue encountering new experiences has still continued throughout the pandemic.”

“I had to however, reframe ‘new experiences’ to ‘renewed experiences’.  As a result of the pandemic, I have spent a significant time alone with myself. This gave me an opportunity to reconnect in many ways.  This reconnection came in the form of reconnecting with friends from over 10 years ago to connecting and reflecting on social issues to reconnecting with myself.  Through these renewed connections, I have a renewed understanding about myself.”

“While the new experiences throughout the year that I choose are valuable for self awareness and growth, this pandemic was a new experience that was forced upon me and everyone else.  It has taught me that new experiences that are forced upon me are just as valuable as the new experiences that I choose for myself. At the same time, the pandemic has also reminded me that it’s okay to take a breather and to appreciate the now and embrace who I am at this moment.”

Embrace who I am at this moment. Ms. M you are so insightful and wise and I’m glad you made the best of your self-isolation time focussing on reconnection and self growth. And hopefully, over time as things start to open up, you can add in some new experiences. Fingers crossed anyway.

Ms. M also shared another reason why she wanted to do an intimate portrait session with me and you can read all about it here. Pretty darn cool if you ask me and I love that her reason now sheds a different light from the anti-racism perspective too. You’ll have to read it to understand what I’m getting at.

So there you have it. While I’ve always known that doing a Vancouver Boudoir Session is a form of self care and self love, opting to do it for your birthday is a fantastic idea! It’s all about celebrating the incredible woman that you are, regardless of age, and growing and learning more about you. Feeling empowered and badass. And, now that my studio is officially open again with all of the Covid precautions in place, you too can book your Birthday Boudoir Session. And, we can even arrange to have some bubbly (or cake) if that’s what you’re into! You deserve to be celebrated!

Boldly Embrace YOU with your own Vancouver Boudoir Session. Please reach out to me and we’ll set it up.
