What to expect
In this blog post I interview contemporary dancer and choreographer Shion Skye Carter
“Shion’s artistic practice is an extension of their Asian-diasporic lens and queerness, investigating identity and reflecting on the complexities of the human experience.”

What does ’sensuality’ mean for you?
Feeling bold, confident, unapologetic, and connected between the mind and body.
How do you embody your sensual energy?
Movement definitely helps me tap into my sensuality. Knowing that I have control and agency over my body, it’s so freeing to make shapes, lines, and movement patterns that take me into different states of being.
What is something you wish people knew about sensuality?
I do hope that more people take opportunities to experience embodiment in their daily lives, and to create feelings of sensuality in ways that feel exciting and grounding to them. It seems as though many people I know outside of the performing arts/dance community don’t often take time to connect with their bodies in ways that deepen awareness and sensation. Dedicating moments of sensuality for yourself can be so powerful, and this is something that I’m also reminding myself to create space for in my own life.

How did you feel like when you saw your photos for the first time?
I was amazed by the way Michele captured fleeting moments of me dancing, or shapes and poses that I improvised in our photoshoot! I remembered something Michele said during our session, about how the word “photography” comes from the meaning “painting with light”. The images Michele captured with her camera, especially the ones where she created shadows and moody atmospheres using lighting at different angles, truly showed that Michele does paint with light, and her work is art.
how would you describe working with me?
Working with you felt casual, organic, and so fun! It was lovely to be in the room with her, where there was lots of conversation and laughter that quickly helped me feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’m grateful to have connected with you over Instagram (the power of the internet!) and look forward to working with you again.
Thank you again, Michele!
